Baking cookies and Extreme hiking

Thank you Judy for inviting us to your house and for teaching us how to make these delicious cookies

Yummy sugar cookies ready to eat

Tuesday we tackled one of our most challenging hikes....after being dropped off by bus at the top of the Gilboa Mountains, we trekked all the way back down to Kibbutz
Even though it was all mostly downhill, the terrain was uneasy, muddy and very slippery

This looks like a great place to take a break

Inside a cave that would have been used hundreds or even thousands of years ago by local inhabitants

If only I could rebuild this car...I can drive back to Kibbutz!!!

Water break!!!

Passing cows and bulls along the way

Hula Valley and Carrot Factory Tour

This week we went to the Agamon Hula Park, situated in the heart of the Hula Valley. This park is considered one of the world's most prominent bird-watching sites.

We were able to witness over 100,000 cranes resting and refilling their energy reserves required for their remaining migration to Africa. Once the cranes have their fill of provided food, they are forced away as not to damage the agricultural fields surrounding the park

Josh and Max bird watching through binoculars

Not only did we see a beautiful assortment of birds, but also some water buffalo, mules, and a large semi-aquatic rodent called a "nutria"

Standing on a "gesher"

Max

What a beautiful day in the park.  We walked over five miles and had an amazing time

Later in the week we had a chance to tour Shluchot's very own carrot factory

Carrot's are a huge part of the revenue that comes into Shluchot.  The factory employs not only members of the Kibbutz, but also workers from the neighboring communities

Carrots are brought by truck to Shluchot and are sorted, washed, polished, cut and packaged

We were allowed to taste carrots "fresh" off the line

Latrun, Beit Guvrin, Olive oil and Hashmonaim

This week brought us to Yad La-shiryon in Latrun, which is the offical memorial site for the fallen soldiers from the armored corps. from WWII til present.

We were able to see, and climb on some of the 200 armored battle vehicles gathered at this museum/memorial

On top of an Israeli Merkaav tank

Tanks from Britain, France, America, the Soviet Union and of course Israel are on display

"I have my drivers license....can I take it for a spin?"

After, we headed to Beit Guvrin National Park, where we had the great opportunity to explore some of the ruins of Maresha, one of the important towns of Judah during the time of the First Temple.

There are over 2,000 caves in in the Beit Guvrin area, but only a small portion of them have been excavated.  Found so far have been a large Jewish cemetary, a Roman-Byzantine amphitheater, a Byzantine church, public baths, mosaics, and burial caves.

It was a tight squeeze...but we made it in
This particular cave had an olive oil press so its inhabitants could hide the process secretly underground

Down....Down.......Down

Many of the caves go very far underground and are inter- connected by small corridors. This particular cave was used as a fresh water cistern

Friday morning, we helped the Shluchot staff fill, label and cap cans of olive oil which will be sold in our Kolbo

Almost 180 cans finished!!!! Now that's teamwork.

Max with the final product

Waiting for the bus to take us to Hashmonaim for Shabbos with the Katz family

Thank you Stuart,Carol and the whole family for hosting us for a beautiful Shabbos!!
